The Green Team at John Hay
By Mary Lou Laprade
The Green Team at John Hay is composed of energetic teachers, staff members, and parents who want to enable and empower our students to make a difference in the world. We have big plans that range from service learning opportunities to individual actions that will benefit both the students and the earth! Check this space regularly to stay informed of all the activity and to find out ways that you can join in this remarkable effort.
An exciting day of action is approaching! 350.org has planned worldwide events to raise awareness of the problem of carbon dioxide emissions that are leading to climate change that has a potentially devastating effect on life as we know it. Studies have shown that emissions of CO2 over 350 parts per million are dangerous. The number now stands at 387 PPM.
On October 24th, people in most countries of the world will gather to show governments that they must do something to strengthen the proposed treaty on climate change before the United Nations meets in Copenhagen in December 2009 to ratify the treaty. Scientists agree that the treaty as it stands, is not strong enough.
In Seattle, people will gather at the fountain at Seattle Center to form the number 350. A photo will be taken from the Space Needle to capture this momentous event. Although this is not a school sponsored event, the Green Team is encouraging families to participate by forming groups to bike, bus, or walk to Seattle Center. We hope to have 350 people from John Hay there! People need to be at the fountain at 3 p.m. to get ready for the photo at 3:50 p.m. Other events are scheduled from 2-5 p.m.
