November 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your child is about to add a spring – or should we say a jump – in their step! For the second year in a row, kindergartners in Seattle Public Schools are receiving jump ropes through a program called JumpUp, an initiative aimed at promoting exercise and developing your child’s awareness about the importance of physical activity. The program is co-sponsored by Seattle Children’s and Treeswing, a local nonprofit working to prevent childhood obesity.

Please visit the website and PRINT A CALENDAR to be filled out and returned to me at school or completed online.

As a parent, you are the most significant role model and champion for your child’s health and fitness. We would like you to challenge your child to jump everyday and log the number of jumps on the calendar provided. When they have filled in 30 days of jumping, they can return their calendars to me, or go directly to the Treeswing website at www.treeswing.org and fill out a form to receive your TOP NOTCH JUMPER certificate.

In order to make sure that the kids actually use their jump ropes – and thus make JumpUp a success – here’s how you can help:

  • Hang the Challenge Calendar in a place where your child will see it everyday.
  • Encourage your child to take the challenge.
  • Spend a few minutes each day playing with your child and helping them with their jump rope skills.
  • Ask your child to create their own jump rope games. JumpUp gives your child the opportunity to exercise for fun and fitness.

We will have a jump rope unit in PE in the fall to further inspire and teach students the value and skills of jumping rope.

Sincerely, Steve Sturm PE Specialist
