Hola fellow John Hay families, staff and faculty,
We will have our first meeting on 11//18/09 at 7:00 PM (address to follow).
Anyone is welcome. The committee serves to support the Spanish program in multiple ways. You truly do not have to speak Spanish to contribute as there are many components that are important to the program but don’t involve speaking Spanish.
Our meetings are fun and light, with sharing food and drink at someone’s home while we make our plans.
Mark your calendars – and more info and reminders to follow.
PS – as always, feel free to email any questions or suggestions to johnhayspanish@gmail.com

Dear John Hay families: My name is Tricia Bentley. I am the Development Coordinator for St. Alphonsus Middle School just across the Ballard Bridge. St. Alphonsus offers families an excellent option for middle school. We would like to give John Hay school families, in particular the families with 5th graders, an opportunity to learn more about us. We have an upcoming Middle School Information Night in mid-November and an Open House in January. This is a great time to come hear about our unique program. Keep reading →

Revised attendance area boundary maps available November 3
During the past four weeks Seattle Public Schools has received thousands of thoughtful comments on the proposed attendance area boundary maps that were presented on October 6. Feedback was received through nine community meetings, a Web-based survey, e-mail, postal mail and public testimony. A high-level summary of feedback is available in the Comment section of our Web site, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions are also posted.
Staff has been analyzing comments and recommendations and will present recommended maps at a School Board workshop on November 3 at 4 p.m. The maps and an address look-up tool will be posted on the New Student Assignment Web site after the workshop begins. Once adopted by the School Board, these maps will determine initial student assignments based on address and will be phased in beginning in fall 2010. Two community meetings are scheduled, on November 5 and November 7, to share the maps and report back to the community on the rationale for any adjustments made to the boundaries.
The School Board is holding a public hearing on Monday, November 9 and is scheduled to vote on the maps on November 18. For a complete list of meeting dates and times, please click here. To sign up to give testimony at Board meetings and the November 9 public hearing, please click here.

Penny Harvest begins Monday, November 2nd
Kids make a difference for our community!
The PENNY HARVEST drive begins Monday, November 2nd and will run through November 20th. John Hay students will join over 500,000 students across the country this month by going door-to-door in our community collecting spare change (http://www.pennyharvest.org/seattle). Funds collected from the harvest will go to one or more Seattle-area nonprofits, decided upon by our very own Hay students.
The most powerful part of the Harvest, 4th and 5th grade volunteers, with the whole school’s input, will decide this Winter which charitable organizations will receive our John Hay Penny Harvest funds. In 2009, John Hay students gave a grant of $1,000 to Outdoors for All to help kids with disabilities enjoy the outdoors. Not a single penny collected by students is used for overhead or operations!
